Chiara Valci Mazzara

Daniela Comani’s work focuses on the topics of history, identity, social stereotypes and entanglements. Her work employs a wide range of media from photography to text based series, video and large scale installations. The artist develops her series and site specific installations utilizing the very same language (textual or visual) the chosen media outlet or publication employs but tweaking and/or manipulating the visual and narrative story-telling which more often than not, reflects directly social values, behaviors and cultural customs which permeate our everyday life.

In the series YOU ARE MINE, Daniela Comani collected and re-elaborated – by changing the gender so that the men would come out to be the victim and the woman the perpetrator -news articles reporting femicides around the world shedding light onto gender-specific murders based on patriarchal power and structures as a problem of the society as a whole.

The site-specific installation of YOU ARE MINE, especially conceived for BAB 2024, invites the public to reflect upon the problem being Thailand, a country with a significant rate of crimes against women. Notably, as reported by the Women and Men Progressive Movement Foundation in 2023, at least 75% of Thai women have experienced domestic violence.

Winner of several prizes and scholarships, the artist presents many solo exhibitions and participates in numerous group shows nationally and internationally. In 2011, she presented her work at the Venice Biennale for the San Marino Pavilion. In 2022 she inaugurated the solo exhibition You Are Mine at the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna in Rome; in 2023 she opened her solo exhibition Planet Earth: 21st Century, at Museo Folkwang, Essen and her installation for the BIENALSUR of Buenos Aires.
